Instructions for First-time Users

To join the meeting click on the link in the invitation.

The link will open a page in your internet browser which will look something like this:
If you are already a Zoom user then click on either the “Open Zoom Meetings” or “Launch Meeting” button to launch the Zoom App on your machine.

If you have never used Zoom before you have two options:

  • If you do not want to download the Zoom app, you can join the meeting directly in your browser by clicking on the “Join from Your Browser” link near the bottom of the screen. [ NOTE: You will be able to watch and hear the talk, but you may not have all the facilities of Zoom – asking questions, passing messages to other audience members or the host, etc.]
  • The preferred option is to click on the “Download Now” link near the bottom of the screen and follow the instructions that appear to download and install the app. [At one point in this process your screen may dim and you will be asked to confirm that you want Zoom to make changes to your system – this is normal. Answer “OK]. Installation should take a couple of minutes or so.
  • As the App starts, a dialog box will appear with audio options. Click on “Join with Computer Audio
  • A similar dialog will appear asking if you want to use your Computer video (i.e. webcam). If you accept, which is normal, we will all be able to see you, but you may choose not to use the camera, in which case we will only see your name on our screens.
  • We may be using Zoom’s “Waiting Room” facility, in which case you will have to wait at this point until the host lets you in to the meeting
  • Once you are in the meeting, you will find icons along the bottom of the screen. The two in the left corner allow you to mute/unmute your microphone and activate/deactivate your webcam.
  • When the speaker shares their screen, the window showing the other participants shrinks to a corner of your screen. If it obscures part of the image being shared, you can remove the participants’ window using a button in the top right of your screen.
