| Extra detail | One day, whilst leading his men to a position, progress was checked by a sniper. He sprang to the parapet, brought down his men and was able to lead on, gaining his point, being complemented by his officers. A fine athlete, he was chosen to carry a despatch and taking a short cut back but alas he never arrived.
